"If anything links us with our wisdom, it's laughter." --Jean Shinoda Bolen

Acrylic on canvas, 14" x 18", 1993

This series of paintings came about as I was looking at a diagram of the vulva in Gray's Anatomy and decided to put my face upside-down into the crowning position at birth. Crossing in my mind were the words crowning  and croning. These images bring to mind the feminist idea that we give birth to ourselves.

"The Crone's title was related to the word crown and she represented the power of the ancient tribal matriarch who made the moral and legal decisions for her subjects and descendants." -- Barbara Walker
